MY PHD RESEARCH IN PROGRESS

Analyzing human–AI interaction and the transformation of participation and communication in public discourse through conversational assistants (chatbots).

Why this research matters to me?

My work has always been driven by a curiosity about human communication, meaning-making, and the ongoing challenge of understanding one another. Today, that curiosity extends beyond human-to-human interaction.

For much of modern history, public communication unfolded through shared spaces. People encountered common events, narratives, and information, even when they interpreted them differently.

Conversational AI introduces another possibility. Individuals can increasingly turn to personalized systems for information, interpretation, advice, and reflection.

My doctoral research focuses on this transformation and what it may mean for human communication, public discourse, and the relationship between the individual and the wider public.

We are no longer communicating only with one another. We are also communicating with and through intelligent systems.

AN EMERGING CONCEPT

The Algorithmic Individual

Building on psychological discussions of the algorithmic self, my doctoral work brings this conversation into communication science through the concept of the Algorithmic Individual.

I propose and develop the concept of the Algorithmic Individual to explore what may happen as increasingly personalized human–AI interactions become part of how people process and make sense of their reality.

The question is not simply how algorithms influence us.

It is what happens when these daily interactions begin to shape how we:

→  Create meaning and form opinions
→  Interpret information and navigate uncertainty
→  Communicate with others in physical and digital spaces
→  Participate in public life and political realities

The Algorithmic Individual is not defined by AI use alone. My research asks how deeply these personalized interactions may be changing the way we think, speak, and connect with one another.

RESEARCH IN PROGRESS

Much of the research and public discussion around artificial intelligence focuses on its impact on media and information systems: misinformation, automated content, algorithmic bias, changing information environments.
These questions matter.

My research approaches the transformation from another direction. Conversational AI is not only producing or distributing information. It is becoming something people talk to, developing interpretations through personalized conversations with intelligent systems.

This creates a different communicative relationship. We are not simply receiving AI-generated information. We are entering ongoing, adaptive dialogues with systems that respond, explain, reframe, and participate in meaning-making.

At the center of my research is a broader question: how might the growing role of conversational AI change the underlying architecture of communication itself?

WHAT I AM EXPLORING

Three interconnected dimensions, one qualitative study

1

 Human–AI Interaction

First dimension examines the relationship between individuals and conversational AI, with particular attention to identity, agency, and algorithmically mediated communication.

2

Participation and the Public Sphere

Second dimension explores how AI mediation may reshape public participation, and the relationship between the individual and the wider public.

3

The Communication Ecosystem

Third dimension explores how AI may become an increasingly influential actor within communication ecosystems, and what this could mean for information, power, participation, and influence.

RESEARCH AREAS & INTERESTS

A CHANGING COMMUNICATION LOGIC

The user talks.  The system responds.
The user asks again.
The system adapts.

MASS COMMUNICATION

 One → Many

DIGITAL MEDIA

 Many ↔ Many

CONVERSATIONAL AI

 One ↔ Algorithm

Digital media transformed audiences from primarily passive recipients into interactive users people could search, click, comment, share, and participate. Conversational AI introduces another shift.

RESEARCH IN PROGRESS

The Algorithmic Individual is a proposed framework that I am continuing to develop, examine, and refine throughout my doctoral research.

As artificial intelligence and human–AI communication evolve, so will the questions needed to understand them.

What remains at the center of my work is one of the defining questions of our time:

How does human communication change when artificial intelligence becomes part of the conversations through which we understand ourselves and the world around us?

The future of artificial intelligence is not only a technological question. It is a communication question, and ultimately a human one.
